Food systems are vital for global food supply but are currently plagued by issues such as pollution, soil degradation, hunger, malnutrition, exploitation, and lack of sustainability. Power imbalances related to gender, ethnicity, wealth, and land ownership further exacerbate these problems. Achieving the 2030 Agenda requires a transformative approach. In Bangladesh, the government is implementing the Second National Plan of Action for Nutrition (NPAN2) 2016-2025, aligned with the National Nutrition Policy (NNP-2015) and the 7th Five Year Plan to improve nutrition, prevent malnutrition, and contribute to sustainable development. The Syngenta Foundation supports these efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Food systems are essential for global food supply, but they currently cause pollution, soil degradation, and widespread hunger and malnutrition. Workers in the food sector often face exploitation, and most systems lack sustainability and fairness, with deep-rooted inequalities in gender, wealth, and land ownership. Achieving the 2030 agenda requires an inclusive transformation of these systems. In Bangladesh, the government is implementing the Second National Plan of Action for Nutrition (NPAN2) 2016-2025, aimed at improving nutrition, particularly for vulnerable groups. This plan is aligned with national policies to help the country achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, with support from the Syngenta Foundation.
The NICE Project promotes improved nutrition in low- and middle-income countries by fostering collaboration between agriculture, food, and health sectors, emphasizing women's and youth entrepreneurship. A key initiative is community resource mapping, which identifies local assets, services, and individuals that can enhance well-being and nutrition. The process creates a database of community resources, guiding the development of community action plans to address nutrition and well-being priorities. This approach ensures resources target the most urgent issues and fosters collaboration across sectors and stakeholders within the community to achieve shared goals.
The NICE Project supports locally driven efforts to improve nutrition in low- and middle-income countries by fostering collaboration between the agriculture, food, and health sectors, with a focus on empowering women and youth entrepreneurs. It uses community resource mapping to identify local resources that can improve nutrition, guiding the creation of action plans that prioritize community needs. The Syngenta Foundation, which promotes smallholder farming in Asia and Africa, supports market-driven innovations and capacity building.
The NICE Project, funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, promotes healthy nutrition through sustainable food production in urban areas, particularly in secondary cities in Kenya, Rwanda, and Bangladesh. It engages local governments and stakeholders to develop sustainable food policies and drive behavior change. The project also identifies gaps and opportunities in health and nutrition services to support interventions, especially for women and youth.
